Summer Scout: San Luis Obispo

City Scout is a blog series where we invite our savviest Brass Babes to share their favorite, lesser-known spots in their local city or town. Kerry DiMaggio shares her favorite spots in her hometown of San Luis Obispo, CA. We decided to call this post a Summer Scout, because we believe SLO is the perfect place for a summer getaway!

Located halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles on California’s Central Coast, is my charming hometown, San Luis Obispo. Because of its near-perfect climate and location, it’s sunny something like 285 days per year and only 10 miles from the beach. SLO, as the locals call it, is truly an outdoor-lovers paradise!

Where to sweat it out: Bishop Peak

San Luis is nestled among several inactive volcanoes, the tallest of which is Bishop Peak. This hike is about 4 miles round trip and gives some gorgeous sweeping views of San Luis City and the surrounding countryside. I’d recommend hiking this one earlier in the day as there isn’t much shade on the mountain!

Where to go for some peace and quiet: The Dallidet Adobe and Gardens

The Dallidet Adobe was built in the 1850’s as a home and is now a historical center and California landmark. The building itself is surrounded by a gorgeous garden and is tucked away at the end of a cul-de-sac near downtown. I love taking a moment to relax there whenever I go. The Adobe and the gardens have particular open hours, so I’d recommend checking ahead if you’d like to visit.

When you want to get a delicious meal: Goshi Japanese Food

This place is hidden away at one end of the downtown. It is a little bit on the expensive side, but all of the fish is fresh and the sushi is amazing. Locals say this is hands down the best place to get sushi and I agree! I’d recommend reservations.

Where to wine: Edna Valley

Ok, so technically this area is slightly outside of San Luis city, but it’s too wonderful to leave off the list! The Central Coast is home to some really fantastic wineries, many of which are located in nearby Edna Valley. My favorite wines come from Chamisal, Baileyana, Claiborne and Churchill, and Wolff. All of these wineries have great outdoor patios, so pack a picnic and enjoy the wine and weather!

For a fun night out: San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre

This professional theatre company offers dramas, comedy, musicals, and more in downtown SLO. It’s an intimate theatre without a bad seat in the house! Stop by nearby restaurant/bar Koberl at Blue for a pre or post-show drink.

When you want to treat yourself: Len Collective

Len Collective is a locally owned and curated brick-and-mortar store that sells handmade jewelry, natural apothecary items, gifts, clothes, and home goods. I pop into Len about once per month and always find something new and beautiful to ogle.
