City Scout: Nelson, British Columbia

City Scout is a blog series where we invite our savviest Brass Babes to share their favorite, lesser-known spots in their local city or town. Our City Scout this month is Dana Leigh Lyons who is sharing her favorite spots in Nelson, British Columbia.

When I need to move my body, I head here.

I love being part of the local yoga community…and getting a big, cleansing sweat! Bambu is a gorgeous heated studio with open-hearted teachers. Classes there are a perfect way to start, end, or break up the day.

For a special thrill, do this.

Okay, this isn’t everyone’s thing, but my biggest high in Nelson comes from plunging into glacially cold Kootenay Lake. I maintain this invigorating practice even in winter months, when the town is covered in white. Not pushing “snow swimming,” but if you’re around during summer, do jump in! To warm up beforehand, take a steep jaunt up Pulpit Rock.

For deep rest, do this.

Yasodhara Ashram, located a short drive and stunning ferry ride away, is one of the most restful places I know. Though the ashram holds regular retreats, you can also go on your own—whether for a meal, afternoon, or longer stay. As a guest, you’re treated to amazing organic food and can access the yoga and meditation rooms, spiritual library, and surrounding lake, forest and mountains. It’s a perfect way to take time for yourself…while savouring the breath-taking beauty of British Columbia.

Where to go for local food and community.

Member-owned Kootenay Co-op is local through-and-through. A true Nelson hub, it supports more than 100 local farmers and suppliers. When shopping for home, this is my number 1 stop…and when looking for an unfussy, tasty meal out, I head to their café. Definitely don’t miss the dessert case full of local delights—the grain-free lemon tart is To Die For!

Where to get the best burger in town.

When it comes to food, my true indulgence of choice is a grass-fed, bun-less burger with a side of yam fries. Rel-ish delivers and even let’s you build your own. Six-ounce, house-made patty topped with garlic mayo, caramelized mushrooms, avocado and goat cheese, please! They offer other mouth-watering, made-from-scratch options too. Such a cozy stop for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

Where to treat yourself to something pretty.

When it comes to local clothing shops, Habits is my drug of choice. Full of high-quality basics and unique trendy pieces, this boutique on Baker Street is hard to resist.

My spot for early release on a Friday.

My favorite way to spend a Friday afternoon is “hair-apy” at Enso salon. Brian, David and Lisel are fabulous stylists and all-around great at making people smile. No surprise they’re some of the most popular people in town!
